Laboratory Handling

Phlebotomy

  • Collect 1 x 2.7ml Citrate (Blue Cap) or 1 x 1.8ml Citrate (Light Blue Cap).
  • Paediatric: Collect 1 x 1ml Citrate Microtainer.
  • Must be venous blood collect - finger prick collects are unsuitable.
  • Tubes must be filled to the line.
  • Spin within 1-hour of collection, double-spin and test within 4-hours of collection then freeze.
  • Testing for Apixaban and Fondaparinux are not routinely available and need to be arranged by phoning the Coagulation laboratory ( ext. 22069).

    Transport

  • Requires urgent hand delivery to Haematology Department along with a copy of the request form.
  • Do not place on 8100.
  • Partially thawed samples should be given directly to the Coagulation staff.
  • Frozen samples are stored in the Specimen Services Freezer (No 35) in the Coagulation rack.
