Phlebotomy

When sending blood for Bartonella PCR, collect a dedicated EDTA tube that is not shared with other test requests. DO NOT CENTRIFUGE.

Registration

Send samples to microbiology department for registration, Monday - Sunday.

Sample Stability

EDTA whole blood: Stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days. Fresh tissue: stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days. If storage exceeds 7 days, freeze the specimen. FFPE/PET tissue blocks: stable at ambient temperature.

Additional Specimen Information

EDTA whole blood: 2 mL
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE/PET) tissue block.

Additional Referral/Aliquot Information

Sample requirements:
EDTA whole blood: minimum 2 mL, unspun.
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE/PET) tissue block.

Sample stability:
EDTA whole blood: stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days.
Fresh tissue: stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days. If storage exceeds 7 days, freeze the specimen.
FFPE/PET tissue blocks: store at ambient temperature.

Transport:
Transport EDTA whole blood chilled at 2–8°C if it will be received within 7 days of collection.
Fresh tissue chilled at 2–8°C if they will be received within 7 days of collection. If this period will be exceeded, transport frozen.
Transport FFPE/PET tissue blocks at ambient temperature.
