Transport

Slides should be prepared immediately at the point of collection and fixed without delay (e.g. spray fixative or immersion in 95% ethanol). Once fixed and dry, slides should be placed in a protective slide holder and transported at ambient temperature

Sample Stability

Fixed smears: Stable at ambient temperature for several days to weeks; however, prompt transport (within 24–72 hours) is recommended for optimal quality and turnaround time.

Pre-testing Requirements

Labelling Requirements:
· A matching requisition form must accompany the specimen container detailing relevant clinical details including any relevant previous details.
· Both slides submitted and the request form must be labelled with at least two patient identifiers (e.g., Full name, date of birth or NHI number).
· Site of specimen is also required.

Additional Specimen Information

The operational hours for the Non-Gynae preparation area is 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays
