Additional Specimen Information

Bone marrow aspirate (minimum 2mL in preservative free heparin): Collection tubes are available on request from the Cytogenetics laboratory. Mix well to avoid clotting. KCH specimens need to be delivered to the laboratory within 45 minutes of collection.

Bone marrow trephine: A single trephine specimen placed into transport media. Collection tubes containing transport media available on request from the Cytogenetics Laboratory. All trephine samples must be accompanied by a peripheral blood sample.

Do NOT refrigerate or freeze. Send same day or overnight.

Clinical details are essential so that the degree of urgency can be assessed and the most appropriate probe(s) can be applied.

Test Method

FISH is a technique in which fluorescently labelled DNA probes are hybridised to target DNA on a slide. Interphase and/or metaphase cells are routinely analysed.
The number and quality of cells examined are based on the NPAAC guidelines, unless otherwise stated.

Limitations / Interference

FISH findings should never be used in isolation to establish a diagnosis. Any signal detected below laboratory threshold is not reported. FISH studies target specific chromosome sequences; therefore, the probes used in this study will only detect abnormalities at the loci specified.
