Sample Stability

An early morning urine sample is preferred because of concentration. Stable at room temperature for 1-2 hours or refrigerated for 7 days at 4 degrees C.

Additional Specimen Information

An early morning specimen is preferable.
The specimen must not come into contact with any metal containing iron.
Aluminum urine pot lids are acceptable, but plastic containers and lids are preferred.

Uncertainty of Measurement

Not Applicable (Qualitative Test). Variability may arise from staining technique, microscopic interpretation and sample age and handling.

The presence of haemosiderin indicates intravascular red cell destruction.
Urinary haemosiderin is detected following chronic intravascular haemolysis (e.g. PNH, cardiac haemolysis) or acute massive haemolysis (e.g. incompatible blood transfusion).
