Basic Screen includes:
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT), Prothrombin Ratio (PR) and Fibrinogen assay. If clotting times are prolonged, the following tests may be performed by the laboratory:
Dilute Thrombin Clotting Time
Dilute Thrombin Clotting Time + Protamine
Echis Ratio
Prothrombin Ratio Correction (PR +_ normal plasma)
APTT Correction (APTT + normal plasma)
APTT - Actin
D-Dimers and Platelet Function Assay (PFA) may also be requested.
Lupus Anticoagulant Screen includes:
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Prothrombin Ratio and Dilute Russell's Venom Time (DRVV).This may also include a Kaolin clotting time (determined by the laboratory) depending upon the pattern of the DRVV results and basic coagulation screen
If clotting times are prolonged, additional testing including mixing studies are performed.
Thrombophilia Screen includes:
Basic Coagulation screen, Antithrombin, Free protein S, Activated Protein C resistance, Protein C and Lupus anticoagulant.
If patient is on heparin or warfarin refer to Anticoagulant Monitoring
Specialised Screens:
1. Von Willebrand/Minimal Bleeding Disorder Screen
2. Thrombophilia Screen
3. Fibrinolysis Screen (requires prior consultation with Scientist in Charge of the Haemostasis Laboratory, Haematology Registrar or Haematologist).
Queries regarding choice and interpretation of tests may be referred to the Scientist in Charge, Registrar, or Haematologist.
Queries with regards to patient management should be referred to the Registrar or Haematologist.
