Laboratory Handling

Transport

Formalin fixed can be transported at ambient temperature: 22-25 °C. Place specimens into 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin (NBF) immediately after removal to prevent autolysis. Select a wide-mouth, leak proof specimen container appropriate for the specimen size. The minimum fixative-to-tissue ratio is 10:1 (fixative:tissue) required to ensure proper uniform fixation and prevent autolysis. Ensure all lids are tightly secured and checked leaks before bagging. Place the primary container into a sealed biohazard bag.

Sample Stability

Routine histology (formalin fixed) specimens are stable at ambient/room temperature.

Pre-testing Requirements

Labelling requirements: Both container and the request form must be labelled with at least two patient identifiers (e.g., Full name, date of birth or NHI number). Site of specimen is also required.

Specimen container must be accompanied by a requisition form detailing relevant clinical details, site, and any reference to relevant previous Histology Pathology would be appreciated.

Additional Specimen Information

Tissue should be immersed in 10 times its volume of 10% Buffered Formalin.

Formalin is a hazardous chemical - appropriate measures should be taken when dealing with it. Tightly secure the container lid to ensure no leaks.

Specimen containers and formalin can be ordered directly from APS by completing the supply order form in the resources below.
