Laboratory Handling

Registration

Register with a M number. Laboratory form requesting biochemistry tests and samples. Process as usual. Acute transfusion Reaction Notification to Blood Bank form, blood bank EDTA sample and transfused unit/s. Deliver to Blood Bank. Blood Bank will determine whether the transfused unit/s need to go to Microbiology. Blood bank will return the unit/s to Specimen Reception with a transfused Unit Culture Request form for labelling and registration.

Additional Specimen Information

Required the remains of the blood or blood product being transfused (blood product bag), with the giving set still attached

This investigation includes a repeat blood group, Direct Coombs test and antibody screen on pre and post transfusion samples. The cross match is repeated on both samples and blood products are sent to Microbiology for culture.
