Laboratory Handling

Transport

Place specimens into 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin (NBF) immediately after removal to prevent autolysis. Select a wide-mouth, leak proof specimen container appropriate for the specimen size. The minimum fixative-to-tissue ratio is 10:1 (fixative:tissue) required to ensure proper uniform fixation and prevent autolysis. Ensure all lids are tightly secured and checked leaks before bagging. Place the primary container into a sealed biohazard bag.

Sample Stability

Routine histology (formalin fixed) specimens are stable at ambient/room temperature.

Turnaround Time

15 days

Final reporting follows the RCPA performance benchmarks: 80% of cases reported within 5 working days. 90% of cases are reported within 10 working days and 98% of cases reported within 15 working days: Turnaround times will vary based on the complexity of the sample and resourcing of the laboratory. Please indicate if the specimen is urgent or if there is a clinic date when results are needed.
