Registration

Samples for 16S testing are registered in the Microbiology Department.

Laboratory

Send samples to the Microbiology Department, Monday to Sunday.

Sample Stability

CSF, aspirates/body fluids and fresh tissue are stable at 2–8°C for up to 7 days. Freeze for longer-term storage. Bacterial culture plates should be stored at 2–8°C.

Additional Specimen Information

Sample requirements:
CSF: minimum 2 mL.
Aspirates/body fluids: minimum 2 mL.
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE/PET) tissue block.
Bacterial culture plate: submit with sufficient colonies

Sample requirements:

Bacterial culture plate: submit with sufficient colonies

Test Method

16S rRNA gene PCR followed by Sanger sequencing for bacterial identification.
