Laboratory Handling

Phlebotomy

  • Collect 2 x 2.7ml Citrate (Blue Cap) or 2 x 1.8ml Citrate (Light Blue Cap).
  • To obtain an optimal baseline specimen patients should be stress free, physically well and for women, the specimen should be collected 5 - 8 days after menstruation commences.
    If a PFA is also required, send 3 x 2.7 mL citrate tubes or 4 x 1.8 mL paediatric tubes.

    Transport

  • Do Not Place on 8100.
  • Frozen samples are stored in the Specimen Freezer (No 35) in the Coagulation rack.
  • Partially thawed samples should be given directly to Coagulation staff.

    Additional Specimen Information

    1. If the specimen is collected from outside Auckland Hospital: send 2x 1.5 ml plasma aliquot, frozen.
    2. Filtered plasma is unsuitable and may lead to erroneously low results.
