Samples are labelled with suffix. Load on the 8100. If a printout of FBC results is received, send with sample.

Separating

EDTA - Do not spin.

Sample Stability

Ideally within 24hrs. Stability studies have shown that samples 3 days old still show positive results.

Limitations / Interference

The alpha thalassaemia strip test is positive in 3 gene deletions and most 2 gene deletion Alpha Thalassaemias. It is also positive in some one gene deletions.
If the strip is negative this does not preclude the possibility of an alpha thalassaemia disorder. Follow up testing is suggested e.g. Molecular analysis.
