Laboratory Handling

Sample Stability

The aspirate sample should ideally be processed and films made immediately after collection for best results. Store at 4 degrees C up to 24 hours if there is to be a delay in processing. The bone marrow biopsy is stable for several days at room temperature if added to 10% formalin.

Synonyms

Bone Marrow Examination

Turnaround Time

1 week

Aspirate results are usually available the day the biopsy is performed, otherwise will be available within a week. Trephine biopsy reporting can take 2 weeks; however, we like to issue complete reports so will wait for results of ancillary testing (cell markers and cytogenetics) before finalising the report which can take up to 4 weeks. Molecular studies are usually reported in a supplementary report. If preliminary results are required, please contact the Laboratory Haematology Registrar.
