Send to the Laboratory as soon as practical; sending via the Lamson tube is acceptable provided the lids are correctly shut to avoid any leakage.

Test Adds Requirement

CSF samples are stored for 4 weeks. Less time critical tests may be added during this time if there is sufficient volume available.

Sample Stability

1 hour for an accurate white cell count.

The white cell count and red cell count should be reported within 30 mins. Routine culture plates are held for 5 days.

Pre-testing Requirements

Please indicate if the clinical syndrome is suspected meningitis, suspected encephalitis or subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Additional Specimen Information

Note that if TB meningitis is a possibility, at least 10mls of CSF is recommended.

Adults: Collect at least 3 -10 mL
Infants: Collect at least 2 - 3 mL
