Additional Specimen Information

2mm 3 full thickness punch biopsy- placed in a sterile container with transport medium at an ambient temperature (8 to 24 degrees C).
Transport medium is provided by the Cytogenetics Laboratory at LabPLUS.
If transport medium is unavailable, please transport the specimen RPMI medium.
In an emergency sterile saline can be used for transport. If using saline, please ensure same day arrival at the laboratory.
Please do not send the sample dry.
Specimens placed in formalin cannot be accepted.

Test Method

Fibroblast samples are cultured.
Depending on the requested test, the cultures themselves are sent directly to the testing laboratory or DNA is extracted for testing.

Products of conception (P.O.C) and postnatal constitutional referral samples will be stored in liquid nitrogen.
NOTE: Haematology samples undergoing fibroblast culture for the purpose of obtaining germline DNA are not stored in liquid nitrogen unless specifically requested.
