FBC analysis should occur within 6 hours of collection but may be processed up to 24 hours post collection if the sample is refrigerated at 4 degrees C. Blood films should be made within 6 hours of collection to preserve parasite morphology.

Microfilaria is often found in patients from tropical areas, especially the Pacific Islands where the parasite is endemic. It causes blockage of the lymphatic system. W bancrofti (var. Pacifica) is most common.
Certain microfilaria have a nocturnal periodicity, and therefore blood collection is best performed at night. W bancrofti (var. Pacifica) does not show nocturnal periodicity.
