Sample Stability: Store fresh clinical specimens at 2–8°C. Store FFPE tissue sections/shavings at room temperature.

Sample Stability

Fresh tissue and body fluids: stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days, should be frozen after 7 days. FFPE tissue sections/shavings stable at room temperature.

Additional Specimen Information

CSF: Minimum 1.0 mL, but preferably 5.0 mL or more. Collect in sterile CSF tube
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Fresh tissue preferred to paraffin-embedded tissue specimens.
Pleural fluid / pericardial fluid
Minimum of 5 - 10 mL collected into a citrate or an EDTA or CPD tube.
Bone Marrow
Collect into an EDTA or CPD tube.
FNA
Collect into a sterile container.
Sputum
PCR is not routinely performed on sputum, which should be sent for Ziehl-Neelson stain and culture.
Paraffin block shavings
MUST be sent in a sterile container with minimum of 12 shavings (10-20 microns)

Full clinical details are essential. This enables the laboratory to select appropriate tests and request additional specimens where necessary to establish the diagnosis. Additional consultation may be required.

Specimen Requirements:
CSF: Minimum 1 mL; ≥5 mL preferred. Collect undiluted into a sterile container.
Fresh tissue/biopsy: Submit in a sterile container with sufficient sterile normal saline to keep the tissue moist. Fresh tissue is preferred to FFPE tissue.
Pleural/pericardial fluid: Minimum 5–10 mL. Collect into an EDTA, citrate or CPD tube.
Bone marrow: Collect into an EDTA or CPD tube.
FNA: Collect into a sterile container.
FFPE tissue: Submit a minimum of 12 sections/shavings, 10–20 µm thick, in a sterile, dry container. Do not send the paraffin block.
Sputum: Direct PCR is not routinely performed. Send to the TB Laboratory for mycobacterial microscopy and culture.

FFPE tissue sections/shavings transport at room temperature.

Test Method

Qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (detected / not detected).
