Specimen Requirements

Tube/Container Type:

Preferred

• CSF sterile tubes (Routine Analysis)
• SST II (Gold Cap)

Acceptable

• CSF sterile tubes (Routine Analysis)
• Plain (Red Top)

Both 1.0 ml CSF & 3.5 ml serum are required to detect intrathecal IgG production. In order to minimise false positive tests, both CSF and serum should be collected on the same day.

Use SEPARATE lab numbers for:

SST -OLIS

CSF -OLIG

NSH:
- Spin SST and separate
- Fridge CSF sample.

Waitakere:
Await the return of CSF sample from Microbiology.
Label both CSF and SST(blood) with a separate Waitakere label for Sendaway to LabPlus.
Spin SST and separate.

Samples often arrive at different times. Register the test when both CSF and serum samples have been received.
