Laboratory Handling
Transport
Specimens destined for cytological examination should be sent with a separate request form and in a separate collection pot.
If these arrive they should be forwarded to cytology urgently as time is critical.
Separating
Precious sample,
Hand deliver the sample with a copy of the form to the COBAS operator.
Laboratory
Automation: Sample is a precious sample which may be very viscous.
ALL pancreatic cyst fluid samples need dilution, please refer to SOP.
Testing should be completed within 24 hours.
If received during Evening and or Night shift refrigerate overnight and ensure Day shift is notified that the sample is waiting.

Pre-testing Requirements
Specimen Collection
- Specimens for biochemical tests (amylase, CEA and CA19-9) should be collected into a sterile yellow capped pot (normally used for urine collection).
- There is no minimum volume. However, at least 0.5mL of aspirate is highly desirable. If there is not enough sample to perform all tests, CEA testing will take priority over amylase and CA 19-9.
