Laboratory

EDTA whole blood, Biopsies, and other fluid specimens: should be sent to the Molecular Infectious Diseases section at ambient temperature on the day of collection during normal working hours, Monday to Friday (08:00–16:00). After hours and on weekends, specimens should be stored at 2–8°C in the designated box/rack in ALSS.

Sample Stability

EDTA whole blood, Biopsies, and other fluid specimens are stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days.

Sample requirements:
Unspun EDTA whole blood -2mL. Absolute minimum 0.5mL
Body fluids- 2mL
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE/PET) tissue block.

Biopsies, amniotic fluid, aspirates, and other fluid specimens can also be tested for Parvovirus B19 PCR.
Fresh tissue: submit in sterile normal saline.
Aspirates and other fluid specimens in sterile container.

Sample stability:
EDTA whole blood:
Stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days.

Biopsies, amniotic fluid and other body fluids:
Stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours and at 2–8°C for up to 7 days.

Transport:
Transport EDTA whole blood, fresh tissue and body fluids chilled at 2–8°C.

Quantitative and Qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
