Additional Referral/Aliquot Information

External specimens (non-LabPlus) are registered as Technical Work Only. Under this service, LabPlus performs specimen processing, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image acquisition, and provides the TEM images together with an observation sheet to the requesting laboratory. No LabPlus Histopathologist is involved in the interpretation or reporting of these specimens. Interpretation of the TEM images and preparation of the final electron microscopy (EM) report are the responsibility of the requesting Pathologist.
External specimens should be fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde buffered to pH 7.4 with phosphate buffer before transport. The specimen must be completely immersed in the fixative throughout transport to preserve ultrastructural integrity.

Limitations / Interference

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) will not be performed on specimens in which glomeruli are absent, unless examination of paraffin-embedded tissue is requested by the reporting pathologist.
