Additional Specimen Information

If both Renin and Aldosterone are required, a single EDTA tube is sufficient (minimum 0.8 mL plasma required)
Whole blood EDTA is stable for 8 hours at room temperature
Separated EDTA plasma is stable for 5 days at room temperature
For renal vein sampling: a separate form must accompany each specimen - the site of sampling must be clearly indicated on both sample and form.

DO NOT STORE OR TRANSPORT AT 4 degrees Celsius (cryoactivation of prorenin occurs at 4 degrees Celsius and may lead to a falsely elevated result for renin)

To avoid refrigeration of the sample, it is preferable to not share EDTA samples with Haematology requests.

Sample	4 mL EDTA 1 mL Paediatric EDTA
Sample Preparation	DO NOT refrigerate or chill in anyway Must be separated within 8 hours Photocopy the form "PSOF" the renin (and aldosterone if also requested) Send other samples for tests other than renin to LabPlus Centrifuge and freeze the renin/aldosterone aliquot Use the photocopied form for the frozen renin/aldosterone aliquot Send both frozen aliquot and photocopied form the next day to LabPlus Note: Do not send the primary EDTA tube to LabPlus
Transport to LabPlus	Send frozen aliquot to LabPlus in a frozen canister LabPlus will send a replacement canister

Laboratory Notes
For renin, aldosterone, and aldosterone/renin ratio

Only one aliquot is required for both assays, but MUST have a minimum of 600 uL .
Both renin and aldosterone are stable for 8 hours at room temp. in unseparated EDTA blood.
Both renin and aldosterone are stable for 5 days at room temperature in separated EDTA plasma
For storage for longer times, freeze separated EDTA plasma.
