Additional Specimen Information

Fresh casual (spot) urine required. 24 hour urine is not acceptable.

If the urine is freshly collected on the Grafton campus, use of an unmodified plain container is acceptable, however it MUST be delivered (not via Lamson tube) to Labplus ASAP. Make the specimen reception staff aware of the sample upon delivery. The urine will be adjusted to pH 7- 8 as soon as it arrives.

If the urine is collected at Greenlane or a considerable delay in transport is expected, the fresh urine should be collected into special pots which contains 1ml of Tris-Cl buffer. It can be obtained by ringing LabPLUS specimen reception at 22119 or Automation Laboratory Specimen Services (ALSS) section at 24627 or 22118 prior to collection.

If urine total protein and creatinine levels are not provided, LabPlus will perform these tests to aid reporting

At referring laboratories: on receipt of the specimen, immediately adjust the pH of urine to 7-8 by adding drop-wise 1M NaOH and checking with pH strips (as some of the urine tubular proteins are unstable at acidic pH). Freeze specimen and send frozen to Labplus.

Test Method

Immunofixation (Sebia kit)

For ALSS staff: Special urine pots which contains 1ml of Tris-Cl buffer are stored at ALSS freezer 36 - VIM - ichem carousel. If run out, can be obtained from Automation Laboratory Specimen Services(ALSS) section.

During working hours, automation staff:

- Register it for Urine Tubular Protein Profile - UTPP

- Please hand the specimen immediately to immunochemistry area (Proteins section)

- At immunochemistry area: immediately adjust the pH of the urine to 7-8 by adding drop-wise 1M NaOH and checking with pH strips. Record pH on the request form and the urine pot, sign and date. pH strips and 1M NaOH stored on the ALSS urines bench in pot labelled "BETA 2 MICROGLOBULIN, URINE".

After Hours ALSS:

- Register it for Urine Tubular Protein Profile - UTPP

- Immediately adjust the pH of the urine to 7-8 by adding drop-wise 1M NaOH and checking with pH strips.

- Record pH on the request form and the urine pot, sign and date.

- Urine to be frozen in the Immunology draw in freezer 35 specimen reception.

- Specimen reception to leave request form on ICHEM proteins bench.

- pH strips and 1M NaOH stored on the ALSS urines bench in pot labelled "BETA 2 MICROGLOBULIN, URINE"
