Laboratory Handling

Phlebotomy

Collect:

  • 1 x 4ml EDTA (Lavendar Cap) - Always Required
  • 2 x 2.7ml Citrate (Blue Cap) or 3 x 1.8ml Citrate (Light Blue Cap).
  • Tube must be adequately filled.
  • The patients should be medically stable and off both oral anticoagulant and heparin therapy at the time of testing.
  • The venepuncture should be atraumatic.
  • If the specimen is collected from outside Auckland Hospital: send 2x 1ml plasma aliquots, double spun and frozen.
  • If requesting a LUPUS screen at the same time, send an additional tube or filtered aliquot.

    Transport

  • Do Not Place on 8100.
  • Frozen samples are stored in the Specimen Freezer (No 35) in the Coagulation rack.
  • Partially thawed samples should be given directly to Coagulation staff.

    Registration

    Please register test code CMSC.

    Separating

    Frozen samples are stored in the Specimen Services Freezer (No 35) in the Coagulation rack.
    Partially thawed samples should be given directly to the Coagulation staff.

    Pre-testing Requirements

    A Thrombophilia screen will not be performed without a Thrombophilia testing request form being received. This should be printed out, filled in with the appropriate indication marked and attached to the laboratory request form.
