Testing Laboratory

Auckland Te Toka Tumai | Auckland Hospital

Department

Chemical Pathology

Delphic Registration Code (Alpha Code)

TPMT

Test Code (Numeric Code)

3136

Laboratory Handling

Phlebotomy

Requires 2x 4mL EDTA tubes: One for measuring TPMT and haematocrit; the second for genotyping

Note: a third EDTA tube will be required if NUDT15 testing is requested

    Transport

    Refrigerated 4°C

    Registration

If micro EDTA tubes are received please register for QSCP.

    Separating

One (EA) for a full blood count (MFBC) and then into the HPLC rack for TPMT
The other (EB) must remain unopened and go directly to the HPLC OBS.

    Laboratory

    LabPLUS High Performance Liquid Chromatography

    Test Adds Requirement

The second tube is for genotyping either if initially requested or later if the activity level is low, or if the lab is called within 2 weeks of receiving the samples.

    Sample Stability

    Fridge/4°C for storage and transport

Synonyms

Thiopurine methyltransferase activity, TPMT, 6-Thiopurine Methyltransferase

Turnaround Time

1 week

TAT: Between 3 days and 1 week.
TPMT activity assay is performed twice weekly.
If a sample requires further genetic testing it will be subject to the turnaround times of the genetics department.

Additional Specimen Information

EDTA (Whole Blood) - 2 x 4 mL Tubes Required

Both specimens will go on the 8100. One (EA) for a full blood count (MFBC) and then into the HPLC rack for TPMT.

The other (EB) will go directly to the HPLC OBS and should then be placed in the HPLC rack in case genetic testing is required. This tube must remain unopened.

If only 1 EDTA tube is received please register for TPMT and QSCP. The tube can still go on the 8100 and HPLC will follow up.

If micro EDTA tubes are received please register for QSCP and place in the HPLC specimen rack for follow up.

If both TPMT and NUDT15 are requested, please register for TPMT testing here and NUDT15 as a DG sendaway - refer to test guide page.
